Have you wondered about juicing? Curious whether this is just a fad or actually a technique that fosters health? Let me tell you about the benefits and share why you should start juicing!

Did you know that when you make juice from raw vegetables and fruits, your body absorbs the nutrients within minutes? Talk about an energy shot! No need to buy those sugary and chemical-ish concoctions from the drugstore or mini mart! Juicing is an all-natural way to boost your energy and feel amazing.

Antioxidants, Vitamins and Minerals

When you juice your fruits and veggies, you extract the water and nutrients from them and leave behind the plant fibers. The nutrients in fresh juice include antioxidants, vitamins and minerals. Often, when you juice, you will get far more nutrition because it is easier to drink a glass of juice than to eat pounds of raw produce. Also, because juice is fiber free, it is less filling.

Don’t we need fiber?

While fiber is important for digestion, there is a benefit to including fiber-free juice in your diet! By separating the fruit or vegetable from its fiber, we gain access to all of the amazing vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and phytonutrients which are much more easily assimilated by our body than if we were to eat them. Fiber helps to slow the digestive process. With juice that is free of fiber, absorption is optimized.

Recapping the benefits

  • Fiber free juice allows your body to absorb nutrients more quickly, without having to digest the dense bulk of the plant.
  • You can fit an amazing amount of veggies into a single glass of juice, making it a great way to use up those extra veggies from your garden or CSA share.
  • Juice can be both delicious and pack a powerful nutritional punch.

Although some would also say that the cost of stocking enough fresh organic vegetables to make daily juices can be somewhat expensive, my feeling is that if you stop buying all of the pre-packaged foods/snacks you were buying, you will end up saving money in the long run on your food AND your doctor bills.

One caution: while you can control the quality of ingredients when you are making fresh juice at home, always read your labels when it comes to buying store-bought juice. Prepared juices can be high in sugar and have a high glycemic load, which may cause blood sugar imbalances. Creating your own juices that use vegetables and greens as the base and a bit of fruit for sweetness will help you enjoy juice without spiking your blood sugar.
